This Japanese go board was shipped to Colorado for refurbishing. It has the wavy grain, high density, and candy color that we expect from Kaya. It is just over 6.3cm thick and weighs 6.3kg.
This is a hagi board, made of 3 pieces of wood joined together. This type of construction helps prevent warping that may occur when a thin board is made of a single piece. However, the pieces selected for construction of this board included lumber central to the tree, which makes for a unique look but may be more likely to warp.
The board carries some marks from use, but is in excellent shape. A knot in the endgrain from the original construction seems to be filled with a separate piece of kaya and yellow paint. The wood was sanded on the 4 sides and treated with Monkey Butter. The raised lacquer grid and painted underside were kept intact.
This is a vintage item.
