Sanada Cord is a kind of Samurai ribbon. It has many purposes for traditional Japanese crafts. At our shop we use it primarily to secure Paulownia boxes. It is made of 100% cotton.
We have 5 varieties in stock, each with a different thickness and color.
You can measure the slots in your Paulownia box to determine the appropriate width, then choose an option from the drop-down menu.
Standard Paulownia boxes are best secured with a ribbon 200cm long. This is what we will provide by default - contact us if you have special requests for something shorter or longer.
Sanada cord originated when Sanada Yukimura, a warlord of the Sengoku period, used it for his armor. The patterns are created using warp and weft threads in a flat, string-like shape. The firm texture and durability of this cotton are used for sword handles, sword hanging cords, and as tying cords for paulownia wood boxes (in addition to Go Bowls, such boxes commonly store pottery, tea utensils, and art objects). In modern times these ribbons are finding new purposes as mobile phone straps and bag handles, and are often seen sewn onto pants, shirt collars, and sandals.
