This Japanese go board was shipped to Colorado for refurbishing. It has the wavy grain, high density, and candy color that we expect from Kaya. It is 5.5cm thick and weighs 5.65kg.
This is a hagi board, made of 3 pieces of wood joined together. This type of construction helps prevent warping that may occur when a thin board is made of a single piece. The pieces selected for construction of this board are quartersawn or rift-sawn, adding great dimensional stability.
The board carries some marks from use, but is in excellent shape. The wood was sanded on all sides. A new 19x19 grid was etched onto the top by a local laser engraver, then an 13x13 grid was added on the underside. Afterward it was treated with Monkey Butter and then buffed clean.
This is a vintage item, so in many ways it is superior to a new board. A new board comes with the risk that it will dry out and crack, or warp and become wobbly, or that the glue-up that connected the pieces will fail. In this case the board has survived those tests of time and developed a lovely caramel color.
