This complete go set came to BadukClub from an auction store in Fukuoka, Japan. It is in excellent condition.
The board is 14.5cm thick, and weighs 12kg. It has an even yellow color typical of Shinkaya (Alaskan Spruce). It is a quarter-sawn board, a Tenchi-masa cut. This cutting style is very highly rated, as it creates straight lines on all almost all of the board's surfaces (some crossgrain is visible on the side). Quarter-sawn lumber has great dimensional stability so warping over time is minimized. Such a cut is only possible with a tree of immense diameter. It is in great condition for a used board, but there are incidental marks. The board comes with a cloth cover and paulownia lid.
The board and legs have a considerable amount of white wax residue - this is a great sign. The board was barely used and the wax will have protected it from the elements. This wax will easily be cleaned up by buffing the board with a clean cotton cloth.
The go bowls are extra large Kuwa (mulberry) with their original finish. Mulberry is one of the premier woods for go bowls due to its even lines and great longevity. They come with a paulownia storage box that closes with a decorative ribbon.
The go stones are slate and shell. There is a full set of 181 black and 180 white, plus a spare of each color. The white stones have a creamy patina and great lines, so they are likely Snow-grade Mexican clamshell but could be Japanese clamshell. They were not measured, but they appear to be size 30-34 (8 to 9mm).
Because this set is still in Japan, it has not been refurbished in our Colorado workshop, so we can offer it at a discount.
