This complete go set came to BadukClub from a reseller in Kanagawa, Japan.
The board is 17.5cm thick, and weighs 17kg. This is particularly heavy for a shinkaya board, and you can see from the grown lines that it was very slow-growing. It has an even yellow color typical of Spruce. It is somewhere between rift-sawn and quarter-sawn, so we would hedge on the side of calling it a Tenchi-masa cut. This cutting style is very highly rated, as it creates straight lines on all almost all of the board's surfaces (some crossgrain is visible on the side). Quarter-sawn lumber has great dimensional stability so warping over time is minimized. Such a cut is only possible with a tree of immense diameter.
It is in great condition for a used board, but there are incidental marks and the underside has moisture marks. The legs are likely Katsura, given their warm orange color. The board comes with a cloth cover and paulownia lid.
The go bowls are extra large Keyaki (Elm) with their original finish.
The go stones are slate and shell. They come with their original box, which indicates size 34 (about 9.5mm). There are a full set, plus 2 spares of each color.
Because this set is still in Japan, it has not been refurbished in our Colorado workshop, so we can offer it at a discount. A large portion of the cost is shipping, as the overall package will weigh 25kg as and is therefore Oversized.
