This Goban came to Baduk Club from a secondhand shop in Tottori, Japan.
The board is make of a single piece, cut in a Plain-sawn style. This is Kiura, the preferred Center cut when a tree is not large enough for a Cross cut. This style shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends, with straight lines along the sides. The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori. It stands about 21cm tall with the legs on, or they can be removed if you want to use it as a table board. There are signs of use, so the board would benefit from a scrubbing followed by a reapplication of paste wax.
Writing on the underside of the board indicates that it was originally purchased for 110,000 yen in July of 1982 (about $1000 at that time). This price points to a valuable wood like Kaya; the dark orange resin in the endgrain seems to confirm this, as does the hefty weight at 7.5kg. However, it does not seem to have a sweet scent.
The go bowls look like Cherry or Mahogany. The go stones are size 31, about 8.5mm thick. The 179 white stones are clamshell and should be cleaned. The 180black stones are slate and are slightly larger to accounnt for black's slimming effect.
This is a vintage item. Some of the stones may be chipped. Other small defects may exist.
