This Goban set came to Baduk Club from a pawn shop in Osaka, Japan.
The go board has wavy endgrain that is unmistakably Kaya with a sweet scent. This deep orange is indicative of Kaya from southern Japan. The cut is Kiomote. This plain-sawn style shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends where the players sit. This section of wood had a knot, so that had to be the bottom of the board. Some hairline cracks have formed in the pith rays near the knot, but the board is stable and will not come apart.
The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori. It stands 30cm tall on beautiful legs, and it comes with a Paulownia lid.
The bowls are Cherry with their original finish. They come with a paulownia storage box, which has calligraphy on the underside indicating that this set was a retirement gift in 1981 and originally cost 400,000 yen (about $2000 at that time, about $7000 adjusting for inflation).
There are 360 stones, about size 30 (8mm). The 180 black stones are slate. The 180 white stones are clamshell. They could use a cleaning, please refer to our Care instructions.
