This goban set came to Baduk Club from a second-hand shop in Osaka, Japan.
The board is 17.5cm thick, and stands 30cm tall on legs. It has a yellow color typical of Shinkaya (Alaskan Spruce). It is a quarter-sawn board, a Tenchi-masa cut. This cutting style creates straight lines on most of the surfaces, so the board is easy on the eyes and only some cross-grain heartwood appears on the sides. This is one of the highest-rated cuts for go boards.
The board is in good condition, with small signs of wear and tear. It would be good to clean and wax the board, unless your climate is as humid as Japan's. The board would really glow with a fresh coat of Monkey Butter. Visit my Care Instructions to learn more. The legs are a darker color (probably Katsura).
The bowls are size XL Kuri (chestnut). Chestnut is known for its unique grain patterns and light weight.
The stones are a full set of slate and clamshell, about size 31 (8.5mm). Spare pieces will be included. Original documentation comes with these Hinata shell stones, and it appears they were polished with Ibotarou powder (some still may be left for another application).
This is a Vintage item.
