This Goban came to Baduk Club from a private home in Miyagi, Japan.
The board has a warm-color heartwood that is a consistent yellow/orange, fading just slightly farther from the center. It is also very dense, at almost 8kg. These indicators point towards Katsura, but could be something similar like Cypress or Matsu (pine).
The cut is Kiura, the most preferred of Center cut when the tree is not large enough for a Cross cut. This is a Plain-sawn cutting style, which shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends, with straight lines along the sides.
The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori. It stands about 21cm tall with Katsura legs, or they can be removed if you want to use it as a table board. It was clearly well-kept, and the white wax residue is a very good sign. The white areas will clear up by rubbing with a simple cotton cloth or a reapplication of paste wax.
