This set came to Baduk Club from a private home in Tokyo, Japan.
The board is a single-piece, cut in the Plain-sawn style (Kiura Itame). This cutting style shows off the endgrain where you will sit, so you can view the beautiful heartwood. The sides feature straight lines, and the playing surface will be unique like a fingerprint. This is an ideal cut when the tree is not large enough to be quarter-sawn.
The wavy heartwood of the endgrain points toward Kaya, but it is hard to tell the material. It is a high-quality board, evidenced by the raised lacquer grid. An application of yellow paint was added to make the board a more uniform color, which was the popular style in the 80s. It could be Gingko or something similar.
The legs are are a reddish-brown, most likely Katsura or Matsu.
The edges and corners are in great shape, as it comes with a cloth cover and paulownia lid.
