This awesome go set came to Baduk Club from an antique dealer in Hyogo, Japan. An inscription on the underside of the board denotes that it was a retirement gift from Kawasaki Steel.
The board is 14cm thick and stands 27cm tall on legs. It has a warm orange color, and reddish katsura legs. It is a plain-sawn board, a Kiura-itame cut. This cutting style is the highest rated when the board is not large enough to be quarter-sawn. The cutting style shows off the heartwood on the ends where the players sit, with straight lines along the sides. On the surface the wood will have unique crossgrain like a fingerprint. There are some incidental marks, please see the photos.
Because this set is still in Japan, it has not been refurbished in our Colorado workshop.
The keyaki bowls have their original finish, which looks very dry in some areas. They come with their original box.
The stones are size 30 slate and shell (8mm thick) with their original box. They were not counted.
We'd be happy to provide guidance on cleaning up this bowls, and we have replacement stones available for purchase if it is not a full set.
