This is a fabulous lacquered goban. It came to BadukClub from a shogi dealer in Osaka, Japan.
At 13.5kg, the wood is probably Shin-kaya, known for its incredibly straight lines. Because of the lacquer, we cannot see the endgrain. It is most likely a Shihou-masa cut (rift-sawn), because the wood visible under the playing grid features perfectly even lines.
It has been carefully lacquered black, and decorated gold with designs of hawks perching and fishing. Far in the distance, little ships are pulling into port.
Some wax on the board and dust on the legs can easily be cleaned up with a dry cotton cloth.
