This Goban set came to Baduk Club from an antique dealer in Hyogo, Japan.
The go board has a warm-color heartwood that is a consistent orange. The wavy endgrain and high density point towards Kaya. It is a tenchi-masa or oi-masa cut, a quarter-sawn style that shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends, with straight lines on as many sides as possible. The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori, and features calligraphy on the underside "Three Lions." It stands about 25cm tall with legs and weighs 15kg.
The board was well-kept with a lid, but we plan to discard the lid before shipping as loose nails can potentially scratch the board. Contact us if you would prefer to keep the lid.
The bowls are Chestnut with their original finish.
The stones are slate and shell, size 38 (about 10.7mm). They have not been cleaned or counted, so we have reduced the price accordingly. If the set is not complete please email, we have replacement stones available with a custom order.
