This old Goban came to Baduk Club from a resale shop in Mie, Japan.
The cut is Kiomote - this is a Plain-sawn cutting style shows off the growth rings of the tree at the ends where players sit. The board incredibly dense. At 12kg, it is far denser than usual woods for go boards like Kaya, Katsura, Agathis, Pine, Spruce, etc. Knowing the exact type of wood is difficult, but it looks like Pitch Pine or Cherry.
As you can see, there is no grid on this board (yet). We would recommend a light-colored grid to contrast the dark board. Using a CNC and filling the grooves with epoxy putty (white or gold) would be one straightforward option.
The legs are a more reddish color, and are Katsura. Removing them is possible, but it will be very difficult.
