This Goban came to Baduk Club from a pawn shop in Aomori, Japan.
The board is most likely Matsu (Pine) or Katsura. At 8.5cm, it is a nice height for a table board if you choose to remove the legs - otherwise it stands 20cm tall on Katsura legs. It has a raised lacquer grid (tachimori).
It is a Kiura cut, the most preferred cut when the tree is not large enough to be quarter-sawn or rift-sawn. This is a Plain-sawn cutting style, which shows off the growth rings of the tree at the ends where players sit, with straight lines along the sides. Heartwood ripples on the surface form a kind of unique fingerprint.
There are incidental marks, some rounding of the corners, and the underside needs a good scrubbing.
