This Goban set came to BadukClub from recycle shop in Kobe, Japan.
The board is make of a single piece of Katsura, cut in a Plain-sawn style. This is Kiura Itame, the preferred Center cut when a tree is not large enough for a Cross cut. This style shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends, with straight lines along the sides. Katsura is a dense wood in waning supply, preferred for go boards because of its rich color and the gentle sound that comes from stones played on it.
The board stands about 27cm tall with the legs on, or they can be removed if you want to use it as a table board. There are only a few small defects, these are noted in the photos.
The go bowls are Quince, also known as Indian Rosewood. They have a high density and great longevity, making them a top-tier choice for go bowls. They will gradually change in color from red to orange to brown with UV exposure.
The stones are slate and shell, but were not measured or counted. They look like size 30 (about 8mm thick).
This is a vintage item. Other small defects may exist.
