This thick go board set came to Baduk Club from a reseller in Kanagawa, Japan.
The board is 17cm thick, stands 30cm tall on legs, and weighs 15kg. It is a quarter-sawn board, a Shihou-masa cut. This cutting style is the highest rated because it creates straight lines on all 6 of the board's surfaces and provides the maximum dimensional stability. Such a cut is only possible with a tree of immense diameter. The color points to Shinkaya (White Spruce). The reddish legs are Katsura. On the underside a single character denotes "gift" so this would make an excellent present. There are some stray marks, and the corners are slightly rounded. A paulownia lid is included.
The bowls are Rosewood or Indian Rosewood. They are size XL and fit the 10mm go stones comfortably.
The stones are slate and shell. There is a full set of 180 white and 181 black, plus two spares of each color. The white stones are 9.8-10mm thick, and look like a mix of grades of Mexican clamshell. The black stones are slightly thicker to account for black's slimming effect.
