This goban came to Baduk Club from a pawn shop in Tokyo, Japan.
The board is a single-piece, cut in the Plain-sawn style (Kiomote). This cutting style shows off the beautiful growth rings where the players sit. The sides feature straight lines, and the playing surface is unique like a fingerprint. A tree is plain-sawn like this when it is not large enough to be quarter-sawn or rift-sawn.
The knottier face of the wood is selected for the underside. The underside of this board looks like it was previously painted (probably to cover up small knot repairs) and then that paint was mostly removed.
The wavy growth rings are unmistakably Kaya, and it carries the unique sweet scent of that wood. Another high quality indicator is the raised lacquer grid (tachimori style) in excellent shape. The edges and corners look good, but there are incidental marks (see photos).
The legs are Katsura. They are in good condition.
