This goban came to Baduk Club from a secondhand dealer in Saitama, Japan.
The board is a single-piece, cut in the Plain-sawn style (Kiomote). This cutting style shows off the beautiful growth rings where the players sit. The sides feature straight lines, and the playing surface is unique like a fingerprint. A tree is plain-sawn like this when it is not large enough to be quarter-sawn or rift-sawn, and the knottier face of the wood is selected for the underside. In this case a small repair is visible on the underside (by the leg) so it is likely that a knot was removed entirely and replaced with a solid piece.
The wavy growth rings are unmistakably Kaya, and it carries the unique sweet scent of that wood. Another high quality indicator is the raised lacquer grid (tachimori style) in excellent shape. It is a standard size, 46cm long and 42.3cm wide. The edges and corners have some incidental marks. Finally, it is very dense. At 12.5cm thick, it stands 24cm tall on its legs. The legs are also Kaya, and some red streaks show off the kaya resin.
