These medium-sized bowls come with standard-diameter stones that are about as thin as they come, 3.5mm-4.5mm. This is nice for players that like the stones to sit flat like they do on a computer screen.
The bowls are a pleasant dark brown color. They were scrubbed clean with turpentine, then treated with a Monkey Butter polish. A small crack has been reglued to keep it from spreading.
The bowls are compact and substantial, measuring about 12.8cm wide and 7.4cm tall. I think they are camphor, but look like rosewood based on the dark tone, thin parallel lines, high density, and the way they color-shift in the light.
Here is a video of the glow:
The white stones are Japanese clams, with a wonderful variety in patina from age. I would call them Snow-grade lines, but they are hamaguri, with lines far denser than you find on stones made from the giant clams of Mexico. The 181 black are slate. There are 185 white - the 5 extra white pieces have been added so that you can exclude a few that you don't like, or to use as spares. Some of the white pieces are dimpled on the underside, so they sit quite stationary.
