This set will last a lifetime, with high class go bowls and snow-grade stones.
The wood looks like Shin-Sakura (mahogany) XL size, based on its color and grain. They have been not been treated, as their original shellac finish is in great shape. A hairline crack on one rim was glued to keep it from spreading. They fit the stones with plenty of room to spare, being 15cm wide and 8cm tall (10cm tall with lids on).
The white pieces are a Mexican clamshell, and a bit thicker than 7.5mm (size 28) at 7.6-7.8mm. The bright white clamshells have dense grain patterns. Among all the white stones there is a variety of grades, but the majority are Snow - please see the photos for details. They were soaked in h2o2 for 2 weeks before being rinsed with distilled water and buffed with iso-paraffin wax. A few have nicks, so five extra are included (185).
The 181 black stones are slate, and are slightly thicker than the white (size 30) which is usually preferred so that they appear the same size side-by-side. They were washed with distilled water and buffed with mineral oil, so it would be best to place a cloth beneath them in the bowl.
This is a Vintage item.
