This Japanese go board was shipped to Colorado for refurbishing. It is Katsura, featuring a high density and a deep red/orange color. It is a single piece, 2.4cm thick, and weighs 4.25lbs. It is a standard size, 44.8cm long and 40.8cm wide, and stands 3.2cm tall on rubber legs. Stones hit Katsura with a muted sound, making it subtly more pleasant to play on.
This board was originally part of a floor board that was repurposed as 4 table boards. The wood was planned on all sides, divided with a band saw, and then sanded. Next, it was treated with food-grade Mineral Oil. Next, a laser was used to engrave a new 19x19 grid on the top. This grid is based on standard Japanese dimensions, with cells 22mm wide and 23.7mm tall. Finally, the board was treated with Monkey Butter and buffed clean.
This is a plain-sawn piece of wood. A laser malfunction prevented the top from receiving a 19x19 grid, and this was perhaps for the best - because it was bowing slightly, the board was inverted (Kiomote) and rubber feet were added to the bottom. There is still room for a 13x13 grid there, but after the top grid failed to print in a centered way (one side has a 0.9cm border while the other is 0.5cm), I gave up on the board and decided to discount it and move on with my life.
This is a vintage item.
