This wonderful set of go equipment was refurbished in our Colorado workshop.
The stones are a full set of size 18 slate & shell (22mm wide and 5mm thick).
The 180 white pieces are Japanese clamshell. They were cleaned with a weeklong soak in oxygenated water, rinsed with distilled water, and air dried. The 181 black pieces are slate, slightly larger than the white to account for black's slimming effect. The black stones were washed and rinsed with distilled water, but they have not been buffed with mineral oil so we leave that option to you.
The bowls are Kokutan (ebony), a dense and rare wood in the rosewood family. They feature beautiful black and brown stripes, crafted expertly with perfect punts/kick-ups. This is an old set, which had dried out and cracked. After removing their original finish, the cracks were reglued. Then Monkey Butter was applied and polished clean. Ebony is very dense and hard, so to protect the stones from chipping or discoloration we recommend adding a cloth liner at the bottom of each bowl.
