This humble Goban set came to BadukClub from a Ryokan (inn) in Hyogo, Japan. It was used there by visitors for a long time.
The board is make of a single piece of Katsura, cut in a Plain-sawn style. This is Kiura Itame, the preferred Center cut when a tree is not large enough for a Cross cut. This style shows off a flamelike pattern on the top, the growth rings of the tree are seen on the ends, leaving the sides with straight lines. Katsura is a dense wood in waning supply, preferred for go boards because of its rich color and the gentle sound that comes from stones played on it.
There are no major defects, but there are the usual signs of wear and tear that come with a used board, such as scratches, impacts of go stones, and a darker color taken on over time.
The go bowls are some kind of fruit wood, with a dark patina from age.
The stones look like 5mm slate & shell. They were not measured or counted, but there should be plenty to play a full game.
