This deluxe go board came to BadukClub from a private home in Osaka, Japan.
The board is 12.5cm thick. It looks like Kaya, but the seller notes that it does not have a sweet scent and thinks it is Shinkaya. If it is truly Shinkaya, then it must have been a slow-growing tree to have the growth rings so close together. This a good example of why Shinkaya carries the name "new kaya," as it looks exactly like Kaya. Shinkaya is generally Alaskan Spruce, known for its straight lines.
The cut is outstanding. It is a quarter-sawn board, a Tenchi-masa cut. This cutting style is highly rated, as it provides maximum dimensional stability and will not warp over time. In addition, this cut aligns the grain so that straight lines are showing on almost all the sides.
This board has immense character with thin, even lines, and a warm overall color. There are very few stray marks, but there may be other small imperfections as this is a used item. Traces of white wax on the underside is a good sign. The legs are Katsura.
