This Goban set came to BadukClub from a pawn shop in Osaka, Japan.
The go board has wavy endgrain that is unmistakably Kaya. The cutting style is Oi-masa, which is remarkable for a Kaya board as it requires a tree of immense diameter. This quartersawn style is highly rated for go boards, as it provides maximumj dimensional stability. Visually, the result is straight lines on most of the surfaces with only a hint of flat grain on one side. The board has a raised lacquer grid made with Tachimori, and it stands 29cm tall on its legs. It weighs 17kg.
Kaya boards are cured for many years before being shaped into a board, so the wood is very stable. A thin layer of white wax residue is present, and this is a good sign. The board would benefit from a gentle scrubbing and a fresh application of paste wax with a clean cotton cloth.
The bowls are a pleasant warm color, likely Keyaki or something similar like Cherry or Mulberry. They have their original finish and they fit the stones comfortably. They come with a paulownia box, it closes with a Sanada cord.
The stones are a full set of slate (181) and shell (180), but they were not measured. They look size 32 (about 9mm). They could use a cleaning, so please refer to our Care instructions for that.
