This Goban set came to Baduk Club from Hyogo, Japan. It was a rather strange shop that specializes in footwear, it is unclear why they had a consignment item like this.
The board has a warm-color heartwood that is a consistent orange/red. It is a Kiura cut, the most preferred of Center cut when the tree is not large enough for a Cross cut. This is a Plain-sawn cutting style, which shows off the growth rings of the tree on the ends, with straight lines along the sides. Heartwood ripples on the surface, like a strong wind on water, create gentle waves. It stands 20cm tall with legs, and comes with its original paper cover.
The bowls are Kuri (chestnut) with their original finish. The stones are glass but were not measured or counted. They look like standard stones a bit short of a full set, and about 6-7mm thick.
