This lovely set includes refurbished Go Stones and high-quality Go Bowls.
The 180 clamshells are Suwabute stones, Japanese clams that are no longer harvested due to depletion. Japanese clams are not graded like Mexican clams, as they grow slower in cold waters at a higher latitude. As a result, the stones have a higher density of lines and are less prone to chipping. The clamshell stones were been cleaned per our Care Instructions, including a week-long soak in h2o2 and a rinse with distilled water.
The white pieces are about 8.5mm thick. Suwabute shells may have unique colors and imperfections, and developing a cream-colored patina is common. In this case many exhibit orange coloration and some are Purple Heart stones. They are very dense, and light has trouble penetrating.
The 181 slate stones are slightly larger, to account for black's slimming effect. They were washed with soapy water, rinsed with distilled water, but have not yet been buffed with mineral oil (we leave this choice to you).
The bowls are an unknown wood type. They are lightweight and feature white and black color with thick bands. They may be Limba or Black Limba (in the Ebony family), Zebrawood, or something like Camphor or Oak. They arrived in our Colorado workshop in good condition, and at XL size they fit the stones snugly.
This is one of our Vintage products. Due to their age, the clamshell stones may have small defects. This cannot be helped with a Used set. If you want a new set of Hyuga Suwabute stones that will be pure white and without any wear & tear, we recommend visiting Mr. Kuroki or HyugaGoBoardStone, where they are available in the $2000-$7000 range.
